NewsThe brewery and their famous hotel

September 30, 2020by Paolo Mattavelli

Hello everybody!

Today we want to talk about the het anker brewery.

His location is in Mechelen (Belgium): a town in which there was a strong beguinage presence.

They were a women religious association that possessed an important “hospital” which is located at the present brewery.

They have brewed beer for the hospital since 1400.

In 1990 Charles Leclef, fifth generation of the Van Breedam family took over the brewery and modernized the brew equipment. Het Anker in the same period opened a three-star hotel in the brewery. This is a unique concept in Belgium.

It would be wonderful to spend a night there! Don’t you think?

While we are waiting for visiting the hotel, we tasted the Imperial Dark and the Imperial Blond!

Every year on the 24th of February, they celebrate the birth of Charles Quint. Therefore they brew a special beer in limited edition called Gouden Carolus Cuvée van de Keizer Imperial Dark (‘Grand Cru of the Emperor’).

This exceptional ale ages well, developing a refined complexity and intense aromas. With powerful notes of roasted malts, caramel and plums, its surprisingly soft and fruity aroma combines a warm roundness with a refreshing taste. This beer was selected “Worlds’ Best Belgian Style Strong” in 2015.

Gouden Carolus Cuvée van de Keizer Imperial Blond is a strong blond beer that was launched in 2008 on the occasion of “10 years Gouden Carolus Cuvée van de Keizer Imperial Dark”. However, it contains more types of malt and 3 different kinds of herbs are added during the brewing process.

Bright golden color, high alcohol percentage and full and well-balanced taste. It’s refreshing, heavy and spicy beer.

Come on, what are you waiting for? Taste them, drink them, enjoy them!
